THE CAVALRY

The fire started off small and before long the entire box was ablaze, drawing the attention of the workers with first the smell of something burning and then seeing it with their own eyes. They scrambled to try to find something to put it out, but the liquor inside their system was causing them to think slowly.

Mike, for his part, had left them to their own devices, slipping into the shadows and down onto the dock where Chance had one of the cigarette boats started. Nobody was looking in that direction as they tried to throw water and then blankets onto the crate. I had no idea what was inside, but it was obviously flammable. They could’ve easily grabbed a fire extinguisher on one of the boats, but they weren’t thinking straight with liquor running through their veins. It was a good way to make them panic and before long we were gliding out of the harbor and into the open waterway.

“That was only half the battle and I am afraid to say that there were at least three other boats missing. I only know that because the lines were still hanging loosely in the water, and I would have to say that a lot of money has exchanged hands. It doesn’t look like we are the only ones that are thinking about coming in from the water, and it appears that the assassins have come up with the same plan that we did. Unfortunately, they have a head start, and we have no idea how long they have ahead of us.”

“We can’t think about that; Chance and we’re just going to have to go on the belief that we are going to catch up. This negativity is going to get us nowhere, and I suggest that you power this thing up to full throttle.” He smiled knowingly, as if we had this secret between us that Mike didn’t know about. Mike was watching in behind the boat, making sure that we weren’t going to get any unwanted visitors, and it appeared that we had made a clean break without detection.

Standing behind Chance, I took that opportunity to grab on to something nice and firm, which, of course, turned out to be his nicely packed buns. “Cecily, this is neither the time nor the place and I would think that you had a bit more sense than to do this right under Mike’s nose.”

“Hey, I know that there’s a possibility that we won’t walk away from this and I would feel like a damn fool if I didn’t at least find out if my assumption was right.” As fast as I had placed my hands on his ass, it was just as fast that I took them off. I didn’t want them to get into a fist fight over me that could end up with both or even just one of them falling into the water. “I’ve never felt so alive in my life and I have you to thank for reacquainting me with an old friend that I thought was gone forever.
